Public Affairs

 ROE V. WADE

Pro-choice supporters gathered at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, January 19, 2003 for an Interfaith Remembrance Service for the 30th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade.  The service featured prayers, singing, as well as some inspirational readings, stories and a remembrance to those who died before Roe and a celebration of our freedom to choose.
On Wednesday, January 22, 2003 PPSA held a Brown Bag Lunch and a Panel Discussion about Roe v. Wade at University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS).  The event was sponsored by PPSA, the UIS Women’s Issues Caucus and UIS College Democrats.
Roe v. Wade resulted in significant shifts in women’s abilities to make childbearing, health care and economic decisions.  PPSA made a strong statement in support of Roe v. Wade on the anniversary of this historic decision.  However, constant attacks against Roe v. Wade continually undermine access to abortion services.  So while PPSA celebrated, we also recognized that vigilance is critical to protecting this sacred right.

2003 LEGISLATIVE YEAR

  IL GENERAL ASSEMBLY:

HB 211 - Contraceptive Equity in Health Insurance passed both houses of the Illinois General Assembly.  The passage of this important legislation proves that advocates really DO make a difference.  In many cases, letters and phone calls to legislators helped to sway the votes. We hope we can continue to count on supporters in future advocacy campaigns to promote reproductive health and freedom!

On July 7, 2003, Governor Rod Blagojevich signed HB 211 into law mandating such state regulated insurance plans that cover prescription drugs and devices to also cover all FDA approved prescription contraceptive drugs and devices.  Illinois became the 21st state to mandate insurance coverage for contraception.  The law took effect January 1, 2004.

U.S. CONGRESS

H.R. 760 - Congress passed a dangerous and unconstitutional piece of legislation aimed at undermining reproductive choice. H.R. 760, "Partial Birth Abortion Ban," prohibits safe, pre-viability abortions, and prevents women, in consultation with their families and doctors, from making decisions about their own health.  In November 2003, PPSA criticized President Bush’s decision to sign into law the “Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act”, an unconstitutional abortion ban.
