| Public Affairs |
ROE V. WADEPro-choice supporters gathered at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday,
January 19, 2003 for an Interfaith Remembrance Service for the 30th
Anniversary of Roe v. Wade. The service featured prayers, singing, as
well as some inspirational readings, stories and a remembrance to those who
died before Roe and a celebration of our freedom to choose. 2003 LEGISLATIVE YEARIL GENERAL ASSEMBLY: HB 211 - Contraceptive Equity in Health Insurance passed both houses of the Illinois General Assembly. The passage of this important legislation proves that advocates really DO make a difference. In many cases, letters and phone calls to legislators helped to sway the votes. We hope we can continue to count on supporters in future advocacy campaigns to promote reproductive health and freedom! On July 7, 2003, Governor Rod Blagojevich signed HB 211 into law mandating such state regulated insurance plans that cover prescription drugs and devices to also cover all FDA approved prescription contraceptive drugs and devices. Illinois became the 21st state to mandate insurance coverage for contraception. The law took effect January 1, 2004. U.S. CONGRESS H.R. 760 - Congress passed a dangerous and unconstitutional piece of legislation aimed at undermining reproductive choice. H.R. 760, "Partial Birth Abortion Ban," prohibits safe, pre-viability abortions, and prevents women, in consultation with their families and doctors, from making decisions about their own health. In November 2003, PPSA criticized President Bush’s decision to sign into law the “Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act”, an unconstitutional abortion ban. ******** Go to www.plannedparenthoodaction.org and sign up to be part of the Illinois statewide on-line advocacy network.
